The geologic epoch between the Upper and Lower Cretaceous, beginning approximately 120,000,000 years ago.

Going back a lot further than when the rift was formed -- back to the middle Cretaceous Period, about 100 million years ago -- the area that would eventually be New Mexico was the site of an ocean coast.
4% sulphur, come from Mauddud, Burgan and Ratawi Fms of the Middle Cretaceous.
It has oil deposits in an Upper Cretaceous fractured Shiranish limestone and a Middle Cretaceous Qamchuqa limestone.
