Middlesbrough

1. an industrial town in NE England, in Middlesbrough unitary authority, North Yorkshire: on the Tees estuary; university (1992). Pop.: 142 691 (2001)
2. a unitary authority in NE England, in North Yorkshire: formerly (1974--96) part of Cleveland county. Pop.: 139 000 (2003 est.). Area: 54 sq. km (21 sq. miles)

Middlesbrough

 

a former municipal county in Great Britain, in what was the North Riding of the former county of Yorkshire, on the estuary of the Tees River. It is an important center for ferrous metallurgy. In 1971, Middlesbrough became part of the Teesside conurbation.
