MiddlesbroughTown and unitary authority (pop., 2001: 134,487), geographic county of North Yorkshire, historic county of Yorkshire, England. Situated on the southern bank of the River Tees, it was formed in 1830 with the arrival of the railway to the site of a new coal-exporting port. Its development was later fostered by the discovery of ironstone nearby. Middlesbrough 1. an industrial town in NE England, in Middlesbrough unitary authority, North Yorkshire: on the Tees estuary; university (1992). Pop.: 142 691 (2001) 2. a unitary authority in NE England, in North Yorkshire: formerly (1974--96) part of Cleveland county. Pop.: 139 000 (2003 est.). Area: 54 sq. km (21 sq. miles) Middlesbrough a former municipal county in Great Britain, in what was the North Riding of the former county of Yorkshire, on the estuary of the Tees River.
