Mieres (mēā`rĕs), city (1990 pop. 57,627), Oviedo prov., N Spain, in Asturias, on the Lena River. It is an important mining center for coal, sulfur, and cinnabar and has iron and steel plants.
Mieres a city in N Spain, south of Oviedo: steel and chemical industries; iron and coal mines. Pop.: 47 618 (2003 est.) Mieres a city in northern Spain in Asturias, Oviedo Province. Population, 64, 600 (1970). It is one of the centers of the Asturian coal basin. Until 1970, Mieres had a metallurgical works. Chemical and food-processing industries are located in the city.
