Hernández, Miguel

Born Oct. 30, 1910, in Orihuela; died Mar. 28, 1942, in Alicante. Spanish poet.

Hernández joined the Communist Party of Spain in 1936 and fought in the National Revolutionary War in Spain (1936–39). He died in a fascist prison. His collections The Expert on the Moon (1933) and The Unceasing Ray (1936) contain intimate lyric poems. He glorified the heroism of the Spanish people in the struggle against fascism in the collections Wind of the Village (1937) and The Man on the Lookout (1939) and in the drama in verse The Pastor of Death (1937). The poems he wrote in prison attest to his civic courage. Hernández was also the author of such plays as The First Fellow (1937).
