Váci, Miháyl

VÁCI, MIHÁLY. Born Dec. 25, 1924, in the city of Nyiregyhaza; died May 16, 1970, in Hanoi. Hungarian poet.

Váci worked as a village schoolteacher until 1950. From 1961 he was a member of the editorial board of the journal Uj Irás. Váci’s lyrics (the collections Cornice, 1955; Everywhere Is Home, 1961; The Power of Poor People, 1964; Acacia in the Wind, 1966), which castigate Philistinism, bureaucracy, and timeserving, are dominated by the spirit of moral exactingness toward oneself and the enthusiasm of socialist collectivism. He was awarded the Kossuth Prize (1965).
