Mikhail Baburin

Baburin, Mikhail Fedorovich 

Born Sept. 6 (19), 1907, in St. Petersburg. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1978). Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1973).

Baburin studied at the State Higher Institute of Art and Technology in Leningrad from 1926 to 1930; he did graduate work there from 1932 to 1936. He joined the teaching staff of the V. I. Surikov Moscow Art Institute in 1961 and became a professor in 1964. He produces monumental, monumental decorative, and freestanding sculpture. His works include The Song (bronze, 1957, Russian Museum, Leningrad), the Monument of Friendship in Honor of the 400th Anniversary of the Voluntary Unification of Bashkiria With Russia (bronze and granite, 1965, Ufa), and Triumph of Labor: Bashkiria (relief, aluminum, 1968, Ministry of Culture of the USSR).

Baburin received the State Prize of the USSR in 1950.
