Mikhail Filonenko-Borodich

Filonenko-Borodich, Mikhail Mitrofanovich 

Born May 23 (June 4), 1885, in Glukhov, in what is now Sumy Oblast; died May 30, 1962, in Moscow. Soviet scientist; specialist in mechanics. Major general of the engineering and technical service. Honored Scientist and Technical Worker of the RSFSR (1940).

Filonenko-Borodich graduated from the University of Kiev in 1909 and from the Moscow Institute of Railroad Engineers in 1914. In 1919 he became a professor at the Moscow Polytechnic Institute and the Moscow Institute of Railroad Transportation Engineering. He became a professor at Moscow State University in 1930 and at the Military Engineering Academy in 1932. Filonenko-Borodich’s principal work was on the theory of elasticity, structural mechanics, and the strength of materials; his research also dealt with practical problems in mathematical statistics. Filonenko-Borodich was the author of textbooks for higher educational institutions on the strength of materials and the theory of elasticity. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
