Mikhail Georgievich Klimov

Klimov, Mikhail Georgievich 

Born Oct. 9 (21), 1881, in the village of Zavidovo, in present-day Kalinin Oblast; died Feb. 20, 1937, in Leningrad. Soviet choirmaster.

Klimov studied in the Moscow Synod School from 1893 to 1900. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1908, where he had studied theory of composition under N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and conducting under N. N. Cherepnin. He became an instructor at the conservatory the same year, and he became a professor there in 1916. Klimov became choirmaster of the M. I. Glinka Leningrad Academic Choir in 1904. Between 1917 and 1935 he was chief conductor, creating an outstanding choir that soon gained international recognition. Klimov was the author of The Primary Solfeggio (1923) and other textbooks.
