Milanovskii, Evgenii Evgen’evich 

Born Aug. 1, 1923, in Moscow. Soviet geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1974.

Milanovskii graduated from the department of geology at Moscow State University in 1949. In 1972 he became head of the sub-department of historical and regional geology at the university. His principal works deal with the regional geology of the Caucasus, the East African rift system, and Iceland; the tectonics and neotectonics of the Alpide folded belt; and the theory of rift formation and orogeny. He developed a classification of rift zones and traced the evolution of rift formation in geologic history beginning in the late Precambrian.

Milanovskii has been awarded two orders and various medals.
