Milford Haven, Welsh Aberdaugleddau, town (1981 pop. 13,883), Pembrokeshire, SW Wales. It is a seaport on the northern side of the estuary called Milford Haven. The bay forms a natural harbor that can handle large oil tankers, making the town a key oil port and refining center. Other imports are cattle, food, and fertilizer. From early times the town was a point for trade with Ireland. Henry II invaded Ireland from Milford Haven in 1172; Henry Tudor (who became Henry VII) landed there from France in 1485. I have relied most heavily upon the Milford Haven collection of postcards, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, even though his collection is nor as extensive as the collections at the Kinsey Institute. Seated here, you can, without moving, look across the luminous bay to St David's Head and beyond to the oil tankers, like toys far out to sea, plying to and from the nearby port of Milford Haven. Several attempts to free the tanker, which ran aground in high tide at the port of Milford Haven Feb. |
