Milgram, Stanley

Milgram, Stanley (1933–84) social psychologist; born in New York City. He studied at Harvard and Princeton and taught at Yale (1960–63) and the City University of New York (1967–84). He is best known for the study described in Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View (1974): Research subjects were ordered to administer "electric shocks" of varying intensity to people in another room; most did so on command, despite the simulated pain and apparent danger to their fellow subjects.
