In east-central MN, northeast of Saint Cloud; established May 23, 1857 (prior to statehood) from Kanabec County. Name Origin: For Mille Lacs Lake in the northern part of the county; French 'thousand lakes.'

Area (sq mi): 681.77 (land 574.47; water 107.30). Pop per sq mi: 44.70.
Pop 2005: 25,680. State rank: 40. Pop change: 2000-20005 15.00%; 1990-2000 19.60%. Pop 2000: 22,330 (White 93.00%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.20%; Other 6.00%). Foreign born: 1.10%. Median age: 38.00.
Income 2000: per capita $17,656; median household $36,977; Pop below poverty level: 9.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,919-$22,486.
Unemployment 2004: 7.00%. Change from 2000: 0.00%. Median travel time to work: 27.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 40.20%.
