Millet, Francis (Davis) (1846–1912) painter, writer; born in Mattapoisett, Mass. He studied art in Antwerp, Belgium (1871–73), and traveled widely, but was based in New York City. A war correspondent for several periodicals during the Russo-Turkish War (1877) and in the Philippines (1899), he painted historical genre scenes. He was the coauthor, with Poultney Bigelow, of From the Black Forest to the Black Sea (1893). He died when the ocean liner Titanic sank (1912). |
