| The newer Red Arrow 9 is being marketed in two variants, both with a maximum range of 5000 metres: the 9A uses a millimetre wave command guidance system while the 9B 'rides' a laser beam to its target. This report details the key technical principles behind each technology, including some currently little known approaches such as 60GHz millimetre wave communications for several hundred metres, with oxygen absorption enabling frequency re-use in nearby links. The tests demonstrated simultaneous detection and processing by two of the missile's three sensors: the imaging infrared (I2R) and the millimetre wave radar. |
