Markwardt and Jean Swank of Goddard identified the source as material falling onto a millisecond pulsar from its companion. Ever since the first millisecond pulsars were discovered in the early 1980s, astronomers have suspected that these compact beasts--rapidly whirling neutron stars--acquired their spin during an earlier stage of evolution, when they stole matter from a companion star. Now dubbed PSR B1257+12, this dense resident of the Virgo constellation is a millisecond pulsar - a neutron star that rotates like clockwork hundreds of times a second. |
