C8H10N2O4A crystalline compound with a melting point of 235-236°C; soluble in dilute acids or bases; used as a depilatory agent. Also known as leucaenine; leucaenol; leucenine; leucenol.

Deferiprone is a bidentate iron ligand (ie, per molecule, it has 2 donor atoms capable of binding with iron) designed to mimic the naturally occurring chelators mimosine, tropolone, and maltol.
The toxic product, called 3-hydroxy-4(1H) pyridone (DHP), comes from the toxic amino acid mimosine.
