Minch, the

Sea channel between the Outer Hebrides islands and the northwestern coast of Scotland. Its width varies from 25 to 45 mi (40 to 70 km), and it has great depth and a rapid current. Little Minch, its southern extension, lies between the island groups of the Outer and Inner Hebrides.


Minch, The 

(also North Minch), a channel in the Atlantic Ocean, separating Lewis Island of the Outer Hebrides from the western coast of Scotland. The channel is approximately 100 km long and 40–70 km wide. It is up to 129 m deep and has a tidal flow. The port of Stornoway is on Lewis Island.
