Mines of Spain State Recreation Area Location: Off US 52, on the south edge of Dubuque. Facilities: Historic sites, visitor/interpretive center, hiking trails (14 miles), ski trails (4 miles), 5 nature walks, bird and butterfly garden, observation blind, picnic facilities. Activities: Hiking, cross-country skiing, interpretive programs, hunting, wildlife viewing. Special Features: Rich in history, abundant wildlife, and unique plant communities, the park features the EB Lyons Interpretive Center and 600-acre Catfish Creek Preserve. It has been named a National Historic Landmark, a National Wildlife Federation Nature Area, and one of Iowa's Watchable Wildlife Areas.
