SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module card) A removable smart card used in all GSM mobile phones as well as UMTS phones, satellite phones and some CDMA phones. It contains a unique subscriber ID (see IMSI), authentication codes, as well as the subscriber's phone contacts and network-specific data. It allows users to switch phones by moving their SIM cards to another compatible phone without having to notify the carrier. Introduced in 1991, SIM cards can be programmed to display custom menus on the phone's display.Full Size, Mini and Micro Three quarters of a millimeter thick, SIM cards come in the original credit card (86x54 mm) form factor, as well as Mini (25x15 mm) and Micro (15x12 mm) versions, the latter known as a 3FF card. To accommodate old and new phones, the Mini and Micro cards are usually incorporated into the full-size SIM card but can be easily snapped out by hand. See SIM lock, GSM, UMTS, CDMA, R-UIM and smart card.
