In south-central ID, west of Pocatello; organized Jan 28, 1913 from Lincoln County. Name Origin: For the first settlement, a railroad siding, from Shoshonean 'broad expanse,' descriptive of the Snake River plain in this area.

Area (sq mi): 762.98 (land 759.62; water 3.36). Pop per sq mi: 25.00.
Pop 2005: 19,014. State rank: 18. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.80%; 1990-2000 4.20%. Pop 2000: 20,174 (White 72.10%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 25.50%; Asian 0.40%; Other 21.20%). Foreign born: 10.90%. Median age: 33.50.
Income 2000: per capita $13,813; median household $32,021; Pop below poverty level: 14.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,447-$18,544.
Unemployment 2004: 7.90%. Change from 2000: 1.50%. Median travel time to work: 17.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 34.70%.
