Nevertheless the pre-1836 lethargy of mining in Huancavelica left room for Indian mine workers to go to the mining areas and exploit the mercury deposits on their own, a trait showing the subtle economic and political autonomy of indigenous mining peasants in early nineteenth century Peru.
