Minnesota, University of, main campus at Minneapolis–St. Paul; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1851 and 1868, opened as a university 1869. Other campuses are at Duluth (1947), Morris (1959), and Crookston (1965). The university is affiliated with the Mayo Foundation for medical research and education at Rochester and with the Institute of Technology, the Heart Hospital (heart treatment and research), and the Mayo Memorial Medical Center (see Mayo Mayo, county (1991 pop. 110,696), 2,084 sq mi (5,398 sq km), W Republic of Ireland. The county seat is Castlebar . The western portion, including large Achill island, is mountainous; the eastern part is more level.
