Minnesota, University of, main campus at Minneapolis–St. Paul; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1851 and 1868, opened as a university 1869. Other campuses are at Duluth (1947), Morris (1959), and Crookston (1965). The university is affiliated with the Mayo Foundation for medical research and education at Rochester and with the Institute of Technology, the Heart Hospital (heart treatment and research), and the Mayo Memorial Medical Center (see Mayo Mayo, county (1991 pop. 110,696), 2,084 sq mi (5,398 sq km), W Republic of Ireland. The county seat is Castlebar. The western portion, including large Achill island, is mountainous; the eastern part is more level.

Minnesota, University of 

one of the largest higher educational institutions and research centers in the USA. It was founded in 1851, and instruction began in 1869. It has campuses at Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, and Morris.

Among the university’s division’s are University College, General College, the College of Medical Sciences, College of Liberal Arts, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Education, College of Pharmacy, and College of Biological Sciences. It also has a graduate school; schools of business administration, medicine, nursing, public health, dentistry, physical education, and law; a technical institute (in Crookston); and institutes of technology and agriculture. Also affiliated with the university are the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, a linear proton accelerator, the Tate Physics Laboratory, a heart-disease clinic, and agricultural and forestry experimental stations. Training is offered in more than 100 fields, including evening and correspondence courses. The university’s libraries contain about 3 million volumes. In 1972 the university had an enrollment of more than 50,000 students and a staff of about 4,000, including more than 1,100 professors.
