Navvab, Mir Mokhsun
Born 1833 in Shusha, in the present-day Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast; died there 1918. Azerbaijani artist, calligrapher, music theorist, and poet. Navvab produced ornamental murals (not preserved), a portrait of Tamerlane (watercolor, 1902, Azerbaijan Art Museum, Baku), and illustrations for his own literary works (Sea of Sorrows, 1864, Republican Manuscript Archive of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR, Baku). His illustrations are noted for a two-dimensional decorative treatment of form. Navaab also painted pictures of flowers and birds (tempera, water-color), which are marked by a fluid volumetric modeling of the subject. REFERENCEMiklashevskaia, N. M. “Khudozhniki 19 v.
