Mishawaka (mĭshəwôk`ə), city (1990 pop. 42,608), St. Joseph co., N Ind., on both banks of the St. Joseph River and adjacent to South Bend; settled c.1830, inc. 1899. Mishawaka's industries are closely associated with those of South Bend. Among its manufactures are military vehicles, aerospace parts, chemicals, plastics, transportation equipment, and fabricated metal products. The city is the seat of Bethel College.

Shyla Aston, age four, of Mishawaka, Indiana, is dead.
Because the enrollment in nursing programs dropped in the late 1990s and healthcare agencies and education programs were seeking ways to increase the numbers of nurses, Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana, and Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, designed a plan to encourage nurses who had been out of nursing to re-enter the work force.
