Mishulin, Aleksandr Vasil’evich 

Born Aug. 18 (31), 1901, in Melekess, presentday Dimitrovgrad, Ul’ianovsk Oblast; died Sept. 19, 1948, in Moscow. Soviet historian. Doctor of historical sciences (1943). Member of the CPSU from 1927.

Beginning in 1934, Mishulin was a professor at Moscow State University. In 1938 he became head of the section of ancient history of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and editor in chief of the journal Vestnik drevnei istorii (Herald of Ancient History). From 1943 to 1945 he was deputy director of the Institute of the History of Material Culture, and from 1946 to 1948, rector of the Academy of Social Sciences under the auspices of the Central Committee of the CPSU. His principal works dealt with the history of social upheavals at the end of the republican period in Rome (The Spartacus Uprising: The Revolution of Slaves in Rome in the First Century B. C., 1936) and with the history of the struggle of ancient Spain for independence (Ancient Spain Before the Establishment of the Roman Provincial System in 197 B.C., 1952). He edited the first Soviet textbook on the history of the ancient world for secondary schools. Mishulin was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
