Misratah (mĭsrä`tä) or Misurata (mēz rä`tä), city (1984 pop. 131,031), NW Libya, located in an oasis. A seaport on the Mediterranean Sea, the city exports dates and grain and is noted for its handwoven carpets, pottery, and textiles. Misratah was known to the Romans as Tubartis. The Italians built its port in the 20th cent. |

This concise treatise of 13 pages was originally presented to the Festival of Zarruq (Mihrajan Zarruq) in commemoration of the great North African Sufi Ahmad Zarruq (1442-93), Misratah, Libya, 16-20 June, 1980; ibid. The most serious among them was the report of an armed rebellion that took place at a military base in the Bani Walid area and spread to the nearby town of Misratah in the late 1993. |
