Mississippi Gulf National Heritage Area Address: Mississippi Department of Marine Resources 1141 Bayview Ave Biloxi, MS 39530 Phone: 228-523-4122; Web: www.dmr.state.ms.us Established: Authorized on December 8, 2004. Management of the area will be coordinated by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources in consultation with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Location: A six-county area within the Mississippi Coastal Plain that borders the Gulf of Mexico. Special Features: The area has been shaped by the natural coastal and riverine environment and a number of cultural influences, including those of early Native Americans and Spanish, French, and English settlers. Yhe area contains cultural and historical sites related to these cultures, including the first capital of the Louisiana Territory, in addition to natural, scenic, and recreational resources along the coast and wetlands.
