Established: Established on November 18, 1988.
Location:A narrow corridor of land on either side of the Mississippi River extending from Dayton, Minnesota, on the north boundary through the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and downstream to Hastings, Minnesota.
Facilities:Partnering organizations and agencies of the National Park Service operate a number of facilities along the river corridor, including state, regional, and community parks, historical sites, and a national wildlife refuge. Facilities at these locations include marinas, boat ramps, hiking trails, historical exhibits, bike trails, picnic areas, and visitor centers.
Activities:Camping, hiking, bicycling, boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, water-skiing, hunting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, environmental programs.
Special Features:In this 72-mile stretch, the Mississippi River flows through a variety of landscapes that include nationally significant natural, cultural, historic, scenic, economic, and scientific resources. The entire length of the river spans 2,350 miles, from its origin at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to the Gulf of Mexico.
