Mississippian SubperiodFirst major subdivision of the Carboniferous Period, lasting from 359.2 to 318.1 million years ago. The Mississippian is characterized by shallow-water limestone deposits occupying the interiors of continents, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also recognized as the interval in which armoured fishes, plentiful during the Devonian Period (416 to 359.2 million years ago), went largely extinct. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
