On the southwestern border of NC, northeast of Asheville; organized Feb 16, 1861 from Burke, Caldwell, Yancey, McDowell, and Watauga counties. Name Origin: For Elisha Mitchell (1793-1857), a professor at the University of North Carolina who was killed while exploring what is now called Mt. Mitchell.

Name Origin: Named by Irish settlers for John Mitchel (1815-75), Irish journalist and nationalist who was imprisoned for helping to lead revolt against Britain and escaped to the U.S. in 1853.
