Mkrtich Karapetovich Ter-Arutiuniants

Ter-Arutiuniants, Mkrtich Karapetovich 

(also Mikhail Karpovich Ter-Arutiuniants). Born Feb. 3, 1894, in Elizavetpol’ (present-day Kirovabad); died Aug. 25, 1961, in Moscow. Participant in the October Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War of 1918–20. Member of the CPSU from March 1917.

Ter-Arutiuniants, the son of a tailor, graduated from a military academy in Petrograd in 1917 and became an ensign. He conducted revolutionary work in the army and later joined the military organization committee under the St. Petersburg committee of the RSDLP(B). During the October Armed Uprising, Ter-Arutiuniants served as commissar of the Petrograd Military Revolutionary Committee of the Kronverk Arsenal of the Peter and Paul Fortress and as commissar of the Pulkovo detachment during the suppression of the Kerensky-Krasnov Rebellion. He was a member of the Revolutionary Committee of the General Headquarters and chief of the revolutionary field staff of the General Headquarters of the supreme commander in chief, N. V. Krylenko. Beginning in 1918, he served in various command posts in the Red Army. In 1922 he graduated from the Academy of the General Staff of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. From 1924 to 1931 he was on the staff of the People’s Commissariat of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Inspection of the USSR. Beginning in 1934, after completing his studies at the Institute of the Red Professors, Ter-Arutiuniants worked as an instructor. He retired with a personal pension in 1951.

Ter-Arutiuniants was awarded the Order of the Red Banner and various medals.
