Moçâmedes
a city in Angola; administrative center of the province of Mocámedes. Population, 10, 000 (1967). It is a port on the Atlantic. The cargo turnover was 5.7 million tons in 1971. Iron ore from the Cassinga deposits is exported from the new deep-water port constructed 10 km north of Mocámedes’ old commercial port. There is a railroad station. The city is a center for the fishing and fish-processing industries (fish drying and canning, the production of fish oil and fish meal). There are also saltworks. Small wooden boats are built.
