Möbius, Karl August 

Born Feb. 7, 1825, in Eilenburg; died Apr. 26, 1908, in Berlin. German hydrobiologist.

MÖbius graduated from the University of Berlin. He became an instructor at the University of Hamburg in 1853 and a professor at the University of Kiel in 1869. From 1887 to 1905 he was director of a museum of natural science in Berlin. He explored the oyster shoals of the North Sea coast. He studied the conditions in which oysters existed and their biological links with other organisms. He suggested the term “biocenosis” in 1877. Mobius was involved in researching the marine fauna of the North and Baltic seas in 1871-72 and of the Indian Ocean in 1874-75.
