Modesto (mōdĕs`tō), city (1990 pop. 164,278), seat of Stanislaus co., central Calif., on the Tuolumne River, near the northern end of the San Joaquin valley; inc. 1884. The center of a farming and fruit-growing area, it has food-processing and canning plants, wineries, fruit orchards, and diversified manufacturing. Modesto also ships meat and dairy products and produces nuts, vegetables, and rice. It was one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities in the late 20th cent.

Modesto

City (pop., 2000: 188,856), central California, U.S., east of San Francisco. Founded in 1870 by the Central Pacific Railway, it was called Modesto (Spanish: “modest”) when W.C. Ralston, a railway director, modestly declined to have the community named in his honour. It was incorporated as a city in 1884. It is a shipping centre for the surrounding agricultural region that includes fruit, nut orchards, and wineries.
