On northwestern border of CO; organized Feb 27, 1911, from Routt County. Name Origin: For David Halliday Moffat (1839-1911), president of the Rio Grande Railroad (1884-91).

Area (sq mi): 4750.94 (land 4742.25; water 8.69). Pop per sq mi: 2.80.
Pop 2005: 13,417. State rank: 34. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.80%; 1990-2000 16.10%. Pop 2000: 13,184 (White 88.20%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 9.50%; Asian 0.30%; Other 5.90%). Foreign born: 4.10%. Median age: 35.40.
Income 2000: per capita $18,540; median household $41,528; Pop below poverty level: 8.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,358-$24,850.

According to The Denver Post, more than 800 residents have signed a petition calling on the Moffat County Re-1 School District to adopt a Bible course promoted by the National Council on Bible Curriculum in the Public Schools (NCBC).
