On western border of AZ; original county; organized Dec 21, 1864 (prior to statehood); in 1871 annexed Pah-Ute County, which had been organized in 1865. Name Origin: For a tribe of Yuman linguistic stock, who inhabited both the CA and AZ sides of the Colorado River. Name means 'three mountains' and refers to the Needles, the three pointed mountain peaks at the center of tribal activities. Also spelledMojave .
