On western border of AZ; original county; organized Dec 21, 1864 (prior to statehood); in 1871 annexed Pah-Ute County, which had been organized in 1865. Name Origin: For a tribe of Yuman linguistic stock, who inhabited both the CA and AZ sides of the Colorado River. Name means 'three mountains' and refers to the Needles, the three pointed mountain peaks at the center of tribal activities. Also spelled Mojave.

Area (sq mi): 13469.71 (land 13311.64; water 158.07). Pop per sq mi: 14.10.
Pop 2005: 187,200. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 20.70%; 1990-2000 65.80%. Pop 2000: 155,032 (White 84.00%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 11.10%; Asian 0.80%; Other 8.60%). Foreign born: 5.90%. Median age: 42.90.
Income 2000: per capita $16,788; median household $31,521; Pop below poverty level: 13.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,610-$20,327.
Unemployment 2004: 4.10%. Change from 2000: -0.40%. Median travel time to work: 20.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 25.30%.
