Moiseenko, Evsei Evseevich 

Born Aug. 15 (28), 1916, in the village of Uvarovichi, in present-day BudaKoshelevo Raion, Gomel’ Oblast, Byelorussian SSR. Soviet painter. People’s Artist of the USSR (1970); member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1973).

Moiseenko studied with A. A. Osmerkin at the Leningrad Academy of Arts from 1936 to 1947. Since 1958 he has taught at the I. E. Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in Leningrad; he became a professor there in 1963. Moiseenko primarily paints battle scenes, landscapes, and portraits. His most significant works are fervent scenes from the Civil War of 1918–20. The artist’s paintings are marked by broad, expressive brushwork. Examples of his works are the cycle The Years of Battle (The Reds Have Come, 1961, Russian Museum, Leningrad; I. E. Repin State Prize of the RSFSR, 1966), Comrades (1963–64), Cherries (1969), Victory (1970–72; Lenin Prize, 1974). Moiseenko has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
