Kalmanovich, Moisei Iosifovich 

Born 1888 in the village of Rybinskoe, Kansk Raion, Krasnoiarsk Krai; died Nov. 27, 1937. Soviet state and party figure. Member of the Communist Party from June 1917 (Socialist Revolutionary from 1904).

The son of a merchant, Kalmanovich in 1917 became a member of the Executive Committee of the Western Front and of the Northwestern Regional Committee of the RSDLP(B); he also became a member of the Revolutionary Military Committee of the Northwestern Region and Western Front. During the period 1918 to 1920, he was commissar of food of the Western Regional Executive Committee, a member of the Western Regional Committee of the RSDLP(B), a member of the Smolensk provincial committee of the RCP(B), a member of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of Byelorussia, and deputy chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Byelorussian SSR. During the same period he was also a member of the Council of Defense, people’s commissar of food of the Lithuanian-Byelorussian SSR, and a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolshevik) of Lithuania and Byelorussia.

In 1920, Kalmanovich began party and soviet work in the Ukrainian SSR and Siberia. In 1929 he was appointed deputy people’s commissar of agriculture, chairman of the administrative board of Gosbank, and deputy people’s commissar of finance of the USSR. Kalmanovich was made people’s commissar of sovkhozes of the USSR in 1934. He became a member of the Central Control Commission of the ACP(B) in 1927 and candidate member of the Central Committee in 1930. Kalmanovich was a member of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and the Central Executive Committee of the USSR.
