Mokrenko, Anatolii Iur’evich 

Born Jan. 22, 1933, in the village of Terny, Sumy Oblast. Soviet Ukrainian baritone. People’s Artist of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1974.

Mokrenko graduated from the Kiev Polytechnic Institute in 1956. In 1963 he graduated from the Kiev Conservatory, where he had studied voice under N. G. Zubarev and A. A. Grodzinskii. From 1963 to 1968, Mokrenko was a soloist at the Opera Studio of the Kiev Conservatory. He became a soloist at the Ukrainian Theater of Opera and Ballet in 1968.

Mokrenko’s parts have included Onegin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Griaznoi in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride, Figaro in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, Zurga in Bizet’s Les Pécheurs de perles, and Enrico Ashton in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. He has also sung the roles of Ostap in Lysenko’s Taras Bulba, Petruchio in Shebalin’s The Taming of the Shrew, Murman in Paliashvili’s Abesalom and Eteri, and Maksim in Maiboroda’s Arsenal. Mokrenko has performed abroad.

Mokrenko received the N. A. Ostrovskii Lenin Komsomol Prize of the Ukraine in 1967 and the Paliashvili State Prize of the Georgian SSR in 1973.
