Molchanov, Nikolai Semenovich
Born May 8(20), 1899, in Gdov, now in Pskov Oblast; died Jan. 28, 1972, in Leningrad. Soviet internist; academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1960); Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1968); Hero of Socialist Labor (1969); lieutenant general of the medical service. Member of the CPSU from 1951. In 1923, Molchanov graduated from the Military Medical Academy. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 he was chief internist of an army and a front. At the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy in 1948 he became head of the subdepartment of hospital medicine, and in 1965 head of the subdepartment of advanced training for physicians. In 1956 he became chief internist of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR. His principal works are devoted to lung pathology, disturbances of vascular tonus, and military field medicine.
