Molodenskii, Mikhail Sergeevich 

Born June 3 (16), 1909, in Tula. Soviet geophysicist, gravimetrist, geodesist, and astronomer. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946).

Molodenskii graduated from Moscow University in 1932. In 1946 he began working at the Institute of Lithosphere Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He constructed a theory for determining the figure and gravitational field of the earth according to measurements made on its surface, designed the first spring gravimeter in the USSR, and worked out the theory of the earth’s tides and nutational motion related to its internal structure. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1946 and 1951 and the Lenin Prize in 1963. He has also been awarded two orders and several medals.
