a short instrumental piece similar to an impromptu and characterized by direct, almost improvisational, lyrical expressiveness. Among those who have composed moments musicaux are Schubert and Rachmaninoff.

The subtle and distinct sound of the Mozartean piano give way to the more boisterous and darker tones of the younger Bach's imagination; by the use of stops, Schubert's Moment Musical becomes delicate and full of colour.
Among the pieces by Schubert are twelve of his best-loved songs arranged for piano solo, along with a complex F-sharp minor version of the F-minor Moment Musical, D.
A Rachmaninov Moment Musical was beautifully floated, lovely in its restraint, and three Granados Spanish Dances (though their length outlives their slender content) were vivid and idiomatic, subtly coloured.
