Established: Authorized as Monocacy National Military Park on June 21, 1934. Law required land purchase by private funds. Federal purchase authorized and redesignated on October 21, 1976. Location: In Frederick, Maryland; accessible from the north, east, and west via I-70, Exit 54 (Market Street), and from the south, via I-270, Exit 26 (Urbana). Facilities: Visitor center (é), museum/exhibit. Activities: Auto touring, hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, interpretive programs. Special Features: In a battle here on July 9, 1864, Confederate General Jubal A. Early defeated Union forces commanded by Major General Lew Wallace.
