Monahans Sandhills State Park Location: 6 miles northeast of Monahans off I-20, in the midwestern portion of the state. Facilities: Campsites with water and electrical hookups, tent camping, showers, restrooms, day-use group facility, picnic areas, nature trails, bridle trails, interpretive center, park store, equestrian area. Activities: Camping, hiking, horseback riding, sand sledding. Special Features: Park encompasses a small portion of the sand dune field that extends 200 miles from south of Monahans westward and north into New Mexico. Most of the dunes are stabilized by vegetation, but the park is one area where many dunes are still active. Active dunes grow and change shape in response to seasonal prevailing winds. The park's Dunagan Visitor Center features hands-on exhibits on the botanical, archeological, historical, and geological features of the area.
