Mondale, Walter F. (Frederick) (1928– ) vice-president, senator; born in Ceylon, Minn. A follower of Hubert Humphrey, he was appointed to Humphrey's vacant Senate seat in 1964. He supported the Great Society social programs and compiled a strong liberal voting record. As Jimmy Carter's vice-president (1977–1981), he was involved in White House decision-making. He ran for the vice-presidency in 1980 and for the presidency in 1984, losing both elections to the conservative Republican ticket of Reagan-Bush. How to thank TFD for its existence?
