Monetary Units of the Countries of the World 

a price standard that is established by a country’s legislation and represents a set weight quantity of gold. Table 1 gives data on the existing monetary units in most of the countries of the world.

With regard to Table 1, it should be noted that on Dec. 17-18, 1971, at a conference of the finance ministers of the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Japan, an agreement was reached to devalue the American dollar (by 7.89 percent) while revaluing (increasing the exchange rates of) the currencies of Japan and a number of countries of Western Europe. Transactions with dollars beginning at the end of December 1971 took into account the declared amount of the devaluation. Following the dollar devaluation, the currencies of most of the member countries of the International Monetary Fund were devalued. Great Britain, France, Switzerland, the franc-zone countries, and some other countries did not change the gold content of their currencies. The gold content of the Soviet ruble and of the currencies of other socialist countries (except Yugoslavia) remained as before. At the time of publication of this volume of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1972 in the Russian version), the new gold content of the devalued and revalued currencies had not been officially announced.
