In central MO, west of Jefferson City; organized Feb 14, 1845 from Cole and Morgan counties, annexed small part of Morgan County in 1881. Name Origin: A French transliteration of an Algonquian word meaning 'God spirit' or 'great spirit.'

Area (sq mi): 418.85 (land 416.52; water 2.33). Pop per sq mi: 36.20.
Pop 2005: 15,084. State rank: 69. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.70%; 1990-2000 20.60%. Pop 2000: 14,827 (White 91.40%; Black or African American 3.80%; Hispanic or Latino 2.90%; Asian 0.30%; Other 3.20%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 35.90.
Income 2000: per capita $16,609; median household $37,168; Pop below poverty level: 9.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,702-$21,973.
Unemployment 2004: 4.70%. Change from 2000: 0.60%. Median travel time to work: 24.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 46.50%.
