On W central border of CA and NV; organized Apr 24, 1861 from Calaveras and Fresno counties. Name Origin: For Mono Lake; the lake's name is probably a Spanish-influenced shortened form of a Shoshonean tribal name, monache or monachi 'fly people'; their staple food was the pupae of a fly.

Area (sq mi): 3131.80 (land 3044.40; water 87.40). Pop per sq mi: 4.10.
Pop 2005: 12,509. State rank: 55. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.70%; 1990-2000 29.10%. Pop 2000: 12,853 (White 76.50%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 17.70%; Asian 1.10%; Other 14.20%). Foreign born: 12.40%. Median age: 36.00.
