On central western border of IA, south of Sioux City; established in Jan 15, 1851 from Harrison County. Name Origin: Possibly the name of a legendary Indian girl who leaped into the Mississippi River when she believed that her lover had been killed; or the name of an Indian divinity; or Ottawa for 'beautiful land.'
